“I bet they don’t even know it. Last weekend I took my son to Ikea to
play on the childrens furniture and eat cheap hotdogs. Actually it was
to pick up a shoe rack that was on sale, but what I found was even
more exciting. I’ve been wanting a turntable for working on my bonsai
for ages and here I find a perfectly suitable substitute at Ikea in the
form of a small lazy-susan for under 10 bucks. Sweet.”

Update:
Reminder: We are getting lots of emails inquiring about
jobs at IKEA. Wish we could help but Positive Fanatics is not
officially affiliated with IKEA. Please direct your applications to
their corporate site/offices. Good luck!
And thanks to all the folks from West Sacramento, CA. and Canton, MI who
are inviting us to their store openings. Let’s see if we can hitch a ride
there.

“Today i wanted to find a desk and pay 10 bucks for it. i know that sounds crazy, but i was on a mission. so i went over to the ikea store. i thought maybe i could find something in the “as is” section. i spent a good amount of time looking at boxes that were like half open and the stuff wasnt put together at all. then the name was something like alkjfalsjg (because everything is in a different language ya know) so i would drag the box over to this little catalog and try to match up the item numbers. well then i asked for help and this guy that works there and this other guy that was just shopping around joined my mission. i told them i wanted like 3 pieces of wood that could be a desk type thing. so they found 2 old pieces of different desks and they made a desk for me!!! it was amazing,”

“I am SO excited that we will soon have an Ikea so close. I
live in Folsom, and became aquainted with Ikea about 2 years ago from my
daughter in Orange County. The first time I went I spent 5 hours there. Now
when I go to Emeryville, I spend the day, Shop, lunch, and shop some more. I
love it!!
Thanks for building a store here!( I am writing right now from my Ikea
computer desk)”

OUTSIDE THE BOX

“Swedish furniture giant Ikea plans to invest 32 million euros to build
a factory in Portugal aimed mostly at the export market, the country’s
Economy Minister Manuel Pinho said on Tuesday.
It will be set up in the town of Ponte de Lima, some 400 kilometres
north of Lisbon, create some 450 direct and indirect jobs, and export
about 90 percent of its production, he told state radio RDP.
The location was selected by the firm because of existence of an
Atlantic port nearby and the presence in the area of several furniture
manufacturers who will be eligible for sub-contracting by the Swedish
gaint, the minister said…”

Here’s an interesting piece on The Christian Science Monitor on the “IKEA-effect” even in countries where the store does not have a presence:

” CALCUTTA, INDIA – Stop at a traffic light in Delhi or Bombay (Mumbai),
and magazine hawkers descend, pressing against your car window a fan of
Bollywood gossip rags, newsweeklies, and … the IKEA catalog?
India, like most of Asia, has no IKEA outlet. The Swedish superstore,
known for its inexpensive yet stylish home furnishings, has swept across Europe
and North America – but not here. Indians who buy the catalogs aren’t interested
in mail order. Instead, they do what middle-class Indians have always done -
have local carpenters make the furniture…
Locally made knockoffs of
IKEA pieces are ubiquitous in the homes of professionals in India’s rapidly
modernizing big cities. Educated and westernized, many of them prefer IKEA’s
minimalist Scandinavian style to homespun Indian handiwork or the clunky British
colonial piece…”

I was at the Schaumburg store today scouting furniture for my new “crib”.

Step One.
As you can see in this Christmas photo I’m practically starting with a clean slate.

Apartment Therapy.
Met Emily and Maggie of Hampshire, Illinois trying out a Klippan for its healing qualities. After seeing these satisfied customers, I’m sold on this piece – the red one.

Child’s Play.
I wish starting anew was this simple.
