Here’s more from the local media:

“(CBS 13)
WEST SACRAMENTO The California Department of Transportation has

Traffic
is expected to be heavy on westbound Interstate 80 toward the Reed

“(CBS 13)
WEST SACRAMENTO The wait is almost over… On Wednesday,
Ikea let CBS 13 inside for an all access sneak preview.
“You
better get here kind of early in the morning. I’m talking about the
beginning of the night because there’s going to be quite a crowd here,”
says Glen Reynolds.
Reynolds would know. He’s first in line for Ikea’s March first opening. And he’s done this before in his native Massachusetts.
Glen
will get three thousand dollars of free furniture for being the first
in line. Today, we got our first full look at the selection and layout
of the store. It’s unique. In fact, if you were to fall asleep in one
of the room displays, you might wake up thinking you were actually at
somebody’s house…”

Just got this excited email from Amanda H:
My friends and I always included IKEA as part of our bay area shopping get- away
and now that the sac location is a mere hour away vs. four we will be going
more often and I am sure our stylin’ houses will reflect that. I can’t say my
husband is as excited, but that is understandable since he has never experienced
IKEA. One trip and I am positive he will change his level of enthusiasm. Thanks
so much for coming to our area, I am one excited girl and future frequent
shopper!!!!!

Eugene Scott of the Arizona Republic reports on IKEA’s offer to help fix up students’ dorms:

” Few have to use their bedrooms for more than sleeping before going away to
college, so making sure the often-cramped space fulfills the needs of multiple
rooms can be a challenge, especially when there’s a roommate involved.
Arizona State University’s Resident Life Department is turning to Ikea
Tempe to help give incoming freshmen some ideas.
The retailer has
decorated mock dorm rooms to help prospective students see what a room in
McAllister Village, a freshman residence hall opening this fall, could look
like.
“We’re experts in planning in small spaces. We have good design
and good function, so it was nice for students to get an idea on what their room
could be,” said Jackie Terry, an Ikea Tempe spokeswoman.”

Here’s a classic from the Onion:

ATLANTA—IKEA, the rapidly growing Swedish retailer of inexpensive home furnishings, claimed another 10,000 American lifestyles in 2003, according to a report released Tuesday by the Center for Interior Design Control.
“This epidemic of self-assembled, clean-lined modernist furniture is still largely contained to densely populated urban areas, but the danger exists that it will spread to other regions throughout America,” CIDC spokesman Chris Greeves said Tuesday. “At the rate it’s moving, our nation could suffer European levels of Scandinavian design within a decade.”
Greeves said IKEA is not easily controlled, as it spreads largely through word of mouth.
“It passes between rooms until it has infested not only your living room, but also your 1.5 bathrooms, your cleanly appointed kitchen, and then your entire sun-drenched, open-plan loft apartment. In the most extreme cases, it will even spread to the string-light-decorated rooftop patio overlooking your recently gentrified neighborhood.”

An email from Michael O.
“I have been to the Schaumberg store several times, Burlington, Philadelphia, Newark and Pittsburgh, and could never understand why there wasn’t one in the metro Detroit area. I plan on taking the day off of work for the opening.”

A practical mod from P.K. Shiu:

“Shoe storage is very important to keeping the house tidy. Us Asian especially
like to take our shoes off at the door. Any normal shoe storage solution is
likely to be too small. What to do?
We bought two IKEA MAGIKER short shelves with doors for our entry hall.
Out of all the series at IKEA, I always like the MAGIKER series. It’s clean
look, especially in the lighter colors, matches a modern interior nicely without
being too cold. Since we have very light bamboo floors, the color further
matches.
The original idea was to use those cabinets as secondary storage, while
giving us a display space for the entry hall. Once we put them up we realized
that they are perfect for shoes. The only trouble is that we could use double
the shelves. Today I found a new shoes rack that is not in their catalog call
FRAN. They fit perfectly in the cabinet, but you need to take one of the doors
off temporarily to put them inside.”
