“FEBRUARY 08, 2006 – Plymouth Meeting, Penn. — If the way to a man’s heart is
through food (hence the kitchen) and the way to woo a woman is with a diamond,
IKEA has figured out how to entice both this Valentine’s Day.
The home
furnishings retailer will be hiding a grand total of 23 diamond rings in kitchen
settings at 23 of its U.S. store locations, according to an Ikea release. And if
that’s not enough, the company is offering $500 and $250 gift cards along with
the ultimate gem—$10,000 toward an all-new, fully-outfitted Ikea
kitchen.
“What would really make most women happier: a diamond ring, or
an all-new, beautiful, easy-to-cook-in, fun-to-live-in Ikea kitchen? We’re
giving customers a chance to win both, but we think the Ikea kitchen, a cook’s
best friend, will really win everyone’s hearts,” said Wendy Clark, commercial
public relations manager, in the statement.
Dubbed
“Fall-in-Love-with-Ikea-Kitchens,” the event will pit three lucky contestants
against one another at each participating Ikea store (stores in Houston, San
Diego and Seattle will not participate in the contest). The customers will be
randomly drawn to compete against each other and the clock in a search for a
diamond ring in an Ikea kitchen room setting. To be eligible, customers must
arrive by 9 a.m. on Valentine’s Day. The contestant who finds the ring in the
shortest amount of time in each store wins, with a maximum time limit of five
minutes.
Runners-up will win gift cards worth $500 for second place and
$250 for third place. Additionally, contestants and those who visit
participating Ikea stores between Feb. 7 and Feb. 28 can enter to win $10,000
toward an Ikea kitchen. The winner will be announced on or around March 7…”

Daddytypes.com reports of an IKEA sighting in Germany:
“It’s not just for Americans anymore. Apparently Europe has fallen
head over heels in love with IKEA. Even the US edition of People
Magazine has taken notice of the trend.
CBB’s Danielle reports
that an IKEA Antilop high chair was spotted last week in Pups, a
family-friendly restaurant in Berlin. Here is a picture of the chair
being used by an unidentified local family during a kinderfeedin…”
From somewhere in the blogosphere, around MSN’s Spaces Sam writes:
“I spent hours putting together the two flat-pack IKEA wardrobes made up several very heavy pieces of wood and hundreds of different screws, nuts, bolts and strange shaped plastic pieces which look as if they belong in a Lego kit. I finally think I’ve nearly reached the end and then I realise I’m missing 3 screws!!!
It was even more frustrating than not having sex for 6 months!
I know I’m not great at reading maps or following instructions, I usually give up and guess but that’s probably why it once took me 4 hours to do the 1 hour trip …There must be a little screw eating monster in the IKEA warehouse who was feeling hungry last weekend….”
Shishi odoshi (ししおどし, 鹿威し, Shishi odoshi?) literally means “deer scarer” in
Japanese. It is a water fountain used in Japanese gardens. Usually made of
bamboo, it contains one or more uprights with a hollow pivoting arm attached
into which water pours from a tube or pipe above it. When the arm gets full, the
weight of the water causes it to tip over and empty, making a sharp sound when
it hits a hard surface below it. This noise is intended to startle any deer
which may be grazing on the plants in the garden. The empty arm is then free to
swing back up into position and refill. The rhythmic clacking sound reminds
visitors to the garden of the passage of time. Although simple in design, it is
highly effective, and safer than most modern deer repellers. Some people collect
them as antiques.

James Cridland mods an IKEA frame into a digital display:
“The plan is to have this picture frame showing all photographs with a
certain tag: and for it to rotate through them every five minutes or so.
So far, I’ve stripped down the laptop, mostly to turn the screen
around, to make it as flat as possible, and to strip as much prettiness
from the casing to ensure the thing runs nice and cool. The frame’s
planned to be open at the back, so that it doesn’t get too hot…”
