“CANTON TOWNSHIP — In just a few months,
the big blue building on Ford Road will open its doors and draw
thousands of weekend furniture shoppers. Gary Krone hopes some of them
will venture into his nearby shop, Carvel, for an ice cream cone or
sundae.

“I go where people are, and people are coming here,” said Krone.

Ikea,
the popular home furnishings superstore, opens on Haggerty Road this
summer, and many business owners like Krone are anticipating the wave
of potential customers.

The Downtown Development Authority and
the Chamber of Commerce are launching a Shop Canton campaign, asking
local businesses to get on board with a marketing strategy aimed at
transforming Ford Road into a regional shopping hub. And they’re using
this summer’s arrival of the Swedish mega-store as their springboard.
Businesses received fliers reading, “Company’s comingAre you ready?”

“We’re
going to be a destination community,” predicted Dianne Cojei, president
of the chamber. “You want them to have a Canton experience — to shop
at more than just at Ikea.”
