Outside the Box*: Little working hands

March 22nd, 2006

Sometimes we just need to pause and appreciate the beauty of the people and things around us.

“If I had a pen
I’d draw in the morning
I’d draw in the evening … all over this land,
I’d draw out danger
I’d draw out a warning
I’d draw out love between all of my brothers and my sisters
All over this land….”

IKEA Hotels coming?

March 21st, 2006

Dft

“Golden Tulip Hospitality Group and Inter IKEA Systems Holding B.V. initiate the development project through the signing of a letter of intent for the first Tulip Inn developed in co-operation with Inter IKEA Systems B.V. and located next to the IKEA Concept Center in Delft.

Amersfoort (NL), Lausanne (CH), Delft (NL) 21st March 2006, Golden Tulip Hospitality and Inter IKEA Systems B.V. together announce their intent for the joint development of a Tulip Inn next to the IKEA Concept Center in Delft, The Netherlands.

The hotel’s exterior and interior is being jointly developed by a team of experts from both companies using the stylish Golden Tulip and IKEA designs, including some of the latest IKEA furniture suitable for the hotel sector.

The IKEA Concept Center consists of all the parts of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. in Delft, including the IKEA Pilot Store and the IKEA Business College. This is a learning center for all IKEA retailers from all over the world. This creates a strong demand for appropriate hotel accommodations to meet their needs. For this reason, Inter IKEA Systems B.V. has been considering this hotel idea for several years and is now in co-operation with Golden Tulip to realise it next to the IKEA Concept Center in Delft along highway A13, between The Hague and Rotterdam….”

I love my Klippan!

March 16th, 2006

Adline, our dear PF pal in Malaysia sent us these photos of her latest IKEA mod:

Adl1

“My 2nd hand klippan came with a blue slipcover & unfortunately, I’m not the
biggest fan of blue. As an alternative sofa covering, I used a queen sized quilt
to protect the seating area. Then, I cut a Bomull bedspread in half and used the
two pieces to cover the arm rests. The look certainly works for me. Meanwhile,
mum has fallen in love with my klippan & is thinking of getting one for
herself. Since she’ll need a slipcover, I’m giving her my unused blue one…”

Ikea neighbors await opening

March 14th, 2006

Catherine Jun of the Detroit News reports on the excitement over at Canton, MI as the opening of the newest IKEA store draws near:

“CANTON TOWNSHIP — In just a few months,
the big blue building on Ford Road will open its doors and draw
thousands of weekend furniture shoppers. Gary Krone hopes some of them
will venture into his nearby shop, Carvel, for an ice cream cone or
sundae.

“I go where people are, and people are coming here,” said Krone.

Ikea,
the popular home furnishings superstore, opens on Haggerty Road this
summer, and many business owners like Krone are anticipating the wave
of potential customers.

The Downtown Development Authority and
the Chamber of Commerce are launching a Shop Canton campaign, asking
local businesses to get on board with a marketing strategy aimed at
transforming Ford Road into a regional shopping hub. And they’re using
this summer’s arrival of the Swedish mega-store as their springboard.
Businesses received fliers reading, “Company’s comingAre you ready?”

“We’re
going to be a destination community,” predicted Dianne Cojei, president
of the chamber. “You want them to have a Canton experience — to shop
at more than just at Ikea.”

“The Essential Francisco Sosa or, Picadou’s Mexico City”

March 10th, 2006

Absolutely nothing to do with the Big Blue Box but exquisitely interesting:

Cmo

”Walking, I am sure my little black pug Picadou would
            agree, is
the essential part of our day. If Picadou could talk,
            I think she
would say that grass is nice, but humans and canines––their

smells, habits and whereabouts (or nowhereabouts)––are
            the most
interesting. So when we go for our afternoon walk down
            the
Avenida Francisco Sosa, which has tall trees, whose branches
            hold
hands across the street, we don’t mind the lack of grass.

            But
first we have to hurry down our own narrow street. Beneath
            the
canopy of bougainvillea and lavender wisteria, birds chuckle;
            a
gecko slithers up a wall into ivy. Weeds and tufts of grass
            poke
between the cobblestones; Picadou picks her way eagerly,
            but
carefully as a cat.

In the length of a ball’s toss we’re in
the alleyway of Montecristo,
            aiming straight at the Avenida
Francisco Sosa. Most of Montecristo
            is spanned by the jail-high
wall of the pumpkin-colored house
            that was listed by Sotheby’s
for several million dollars, but
took as many million years to
sell (I suspect at a much lower
            price than was asked) because,
after all, its front door is on
            an alleyway. Here, the sidewalk
is only two flagstones wide and
cars barrel past fast over the
jumbled stones, the chassis’ creaking
            and tires bumping. Picadou
does not like me to, but I pick her
up and carry her. To avoid
the lamp post, I have to step down
            into the street; then, after
waiting for a VW van to rattle past,
I step down again to go
around a smashed beer bottle. There goes
            the Domino’s Pizza
delivery scooter: put-put-put…”

“TUNHEM cabinets from IKEA. The perfect storage solution for the formal
living room, which we’ve made into a playroom for the kids. Fast clean
up, close the doors, and the room is presentable and ready to be used
for new activities.”
