“I was rolling by Haggerty & Ford Rd. the other day and noticed the
sign letters on the parking lot so just HAD to capture them for you.
These are cell phone pix so not that great but still a decent snag.”

Thanks Heather!

IKEA Wins China with Ice Cream

April 28th, 2006

Kic_1

“Ikea opened its second largest store in the world last week, where else, but in Beijing. The new complex, covering more than 26 acres, offers China’s new generation of homeowners 7,000 products—and at up to a 70% discounted price over what they’d cost in the United States. The price cuts aren’t hard to swallow for Ikea since a large portion of their inventory is manufactured in China.

According to Mei Fong in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Ikea has had to slash prices to interest Chinese bargain hunters, overcome the perception that western products are too expensive, and to stay competitive with knockoffs of their own products for sale in local stores. Low prices, and the lure of 12-cent ice cream cones, seem to be working. Annually, Ikea expects to serve 6 million customers at the Beijing location alone.”

Rally for Raleigh

April 20th, 2006

If you petition it, perhaps they may come:

Rdnc

“The Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area is one of the most culturally diverse areas in the US. With many of those who now call this area home coming here from all over the US and all over the world, an IKEA store would be a welcomed addition to the shopping options we currently have.

Many residents make the four hour trek to Woodbridge, Virginia (Potomac Mills location) to shop at
IKEA and while others in the state make the trip to the new Atlanta location. Of course, procuring larger items are a bit tricky when traveling at those distances.

We, as residents of North Carolina, wish to show our solidarity in our desire to bring an IKEA store to the area.

IKEA Management: we, the undersigned, wish to present our interest in Raleigh-Durham,
North Carolina being considered for a future location.

Thank you!”

Detroit News: “IKEA offers sneak peek”

April 19th, 2006

I woke up this morning to a huge coffee cup of steaming news:

Dfp

“CANTON TOWNSHIP — Amid flat-screen TVs stacked on pallets, sofas shrink-wrapped in plastic and unassembled kitchen cabinets piled atop a table, Ikea store manager Mark McCaslin couldn’t get the smile off his face.

The 311,000-square-foot Ikea store, for months a jumble of steel and sawdust, is finally beginning to take shape. On Tuesday, the yellow block Ikea letters were up on the outside of the building at Ford and Haggerty roads. Inside, brightly colored Ikea signs were sprinkled throughout the store.

“It’s a thrill to see the store evolve,” McCaslin said. “You can touch furniture, sit on things.”

Nearly 200 workers hustled to put the finishing touches on the store, which is nearly 75 percent complete. With less than two months to go before the June 7 opening, employees unloaded furniture and hammered, sawed and drilled as they assembled tables, installed kitchen cabinets and arranged displays.

The sprawling two-story store will stock more than 10,000 items and feature more than 50 room settings, three “model homes,” a children’s play area and a 300-seat restaurant that will serve Ikea’s famous Swedish meatballs.

The excitement among employees was palpable Tuesday as they meandered around the store. The chain has hired 400 employees in Metro Detroit but is still accepting applications…”

Our usual reminder: We are getting lots of emails inquiring about jobs at
IKEA. Wish we could help but Positive Fanatics is not officially
affiliated with IKEA. Please direct your applications to their corporate site/offices. Good luck! :)

Peacekeeping Tour Of IKEA

April 18th, 2006

“Five former Gurkhas – some of the toughest and most feared soldiers in the world – have been taken on by Ikea as security guards.

More used to peacekeeping missions in the Falklands and Belize, the soldiers have now been drafted in to keep the peace……among bank holiday shoppers in Nottingham.

Last year, fighting broke out and 20 people were injured as bargainhunters tried to storm the company’s north London store when as an opening offer it was selling sofas for £40.

Lal Bahadur Gurung, 44, a retired colour sergeant with 2nd Batallion the Royal Gurkha Rifles, told Sky News: “I have never heard anything like it anywhere and I have been on operational tours all over the world, mainly peacekeeping, but also with live amunition in Belize…”

Vitriolica’s new table

April 17th, 2006

Vnt_1

“Caught in the act of staring out the window and drinking an inaugural
cup of coffee while sitting at my brand new work table that I assembled
with the help of Ikea and a screw driver… while it can still be seen,
before it is lost under a pile of watercolour paper, ink bottles, pens
and brushes, cups of cold coffee, cables, ipods, card readers,
speakers…. I could take the dark damp corridor/office no longer…”
