IKEA Chest…errr…Staircase of Drawers

July 14th, 2009

IKEA Malaysia and Lowe and Partners, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia have joined forces with a single mission in mind:  To bring to life the fact that being organized means saving space. The creative idea was to turn the store’s main staircase into a ‘chest’ of drawers, with everything inside neatly organized, highlighting the efficient use of space in an impactful way.

One Lucky Pavement Fan Wins ‘Date with IKEA’

June 10th, 2009

On June 23, Matador Records will finally (production delays!) be releasing the deluxe reissue of the Pavement album, Brighten the Corners, on vinyl.  Back in the fall, in honor of this release and the album’s song ‘Date with IKEA’, Matador held a contest encouraging you to submit photos of your space. The prize? A date to go on a $500 IKEA shopping spree and Swedish Meatball Dinner with a member of Pavement! How cool is that?!  Congrats to Jenny Bergen of New York, who got to go with Bob Nastanovich to the IKEA in Red Hook!

Oval Office in Union Station – EmbraceChange09

January 13th, 2009

IKEA’s campaign, EmbraceChange09 is inventive, as are most IKEA campaigns. This one is a multi-media campaign consisting of a website, www.embracechange09.com, which will allow visitors to furnish the Oval Office with IKEA furniture. There’s also a standing offer to President Elect Obama and the First Lady to furnish any room in the White House for free.

IKEA said, of the campaign expenditures,

the campaign’s significance is on par, if not greater than promotions for new store openings.

Billboards and posters plastered all over the metro system in D.C. have caused a bit of a backlash on sites such as adrants.com. The campaign also includes metro-area bus wraps, the staged Oval Office complete with Secret Service agents staged in Union Station in Washington, D.C. seen above.  Overall, ApartmentTherapy.com viewers are rating the campaign, Hot!

A controversial mock motorcade has spawned a Twitter petition @IKEAGreen – the first petition of its kind on the Social Media site, Twitter.  See Petition IKEA to Go Green with EmbraceChange09 Campaign at the IKEA Fans blog for more information on the controversy over the motorcade which will motor through Washington D.C. for 2 days later this week.

The interactive website (www.embracechange09.com) set up by IKEA for this campaign will be active on the 16th, and in addition to decorating the Oval Office, visitors will be able to enter a sweepstakes to win one of three $1500 IKEA Gift Cards. Wish me luck!

IKEA Hemnes Ad – Not quite as funny as previous IKEA ads, but clever nonetheless. Love the old woman, “I don’t judge.”

IKEA Japan Offers Free Christmas Tree

December 13th, 2008

Well, essentially.  IKEA Japan is selling Christmas trees for about $20 (1,990 yen).  Buy one, take it home and enjoy.  In January (from the 5th through the 18th), bring your receipt AND the tree (no ornaments, please!) back to the store for recycling, and you’ll get a voucher for $20 of IKEA merchandise. Deal!

IKEA Canada is offering a similar deal, only the voucher is good on purchases over $75.  Either way, if you’re going to be shopping at IKEA anyway (and who isn’t, really?) it’s an excellent deal and you’ll be helping reduce landfill waste.  Win-win-win!

Unraveling the IKEA product naming mystery

September 6th, 2006

“Good company, good names? If you are like most IKEA shoppers, you don’t
have a clue where IKEA’s bottomless well of goofy-sounding product names
comes from or what they mean. Why is an IKEA desk called Jerker? Do you want to
sleep on a bed named Gutvik? That’s not a carving knife, that’s a
Smeltpunt. Well get ready, there is a method to the apparent madness.

Items for the bathroom like Apskar (a wash basin), Toftbo (a bathroom mat),
and Sanni (a bath sheet) are named after Scandanavian lakes, rivers and
bays–that seems appropriate.
Stuff for kids is named after mammals, birds, and adjectives. So if you buy
your children a Smyg, they’re getting a lamp named for a wren. And a child’s
desk is Fartful, which of course means “speedy” in Swedish.
Chairs have men’s names like Roger and Joel and Luppio. And materials and
curtains have women’s names like Rosali and Lenda and Ingert…”
