Project: Flickr Picture Frame

February 7th, 2006

James Cridland mods an IKEA frame into a digital display:

“The plan is to have this picture frame showing all photographs with a
certain tag: and for it to rotate through them every five minutes or so.

So far, I’ve stripped down the laptop, mostly to turn the screen
around, to make it as flat as possible, and to strip as much prettiness
from the casing to ensure the thing runs nice and cool. The frame’s
planned to be open at the back, so that it doesn’t get too hot…”

Projekt: Kassett box labels

February 1st, 2006

PK Shiu, our friend from Moleskinerie has found his way to PF. Welcome Sir!

“I have waited and waited, finally we have a local Ikea store !! It’s
here just in time for us to outfit the new loft with selected items
from Ikea. When I was measuring the various space in the loft to fit
cabinets etc from Ikea, I always find that the Ikea items have strange
measurements. For example, why is the LACK shelf 13 3/4 inches wide?

Because,
we are the very last of the developed nation that still uses inches and
feet. The rest of the world has gone metric long time ago, and all the
Ikea global products are in metric. 13 3/4 is really 35 cm wide. So,
when you buy any of the Kassett storage boxes, and you need more labels
for them, they are 3 cm x 6 cm, not some strange measurements.”

PK has kindly made a PDF for Kassett box labels for download here.

Ikea makes a bonsai turntable

January 27th, 2006

“I bet they don’t even know it.  Last weekend I took my son to Ikea to
play on the childrens furniture and eat cheap hotdogs. Actually it was
to pick up a shoe rack that was on sale, but  what I found was even
more exciting.  I’ve been wanting a turntable for working on my bonsai
for ages and here I find a perfectly suitable substitute at Ikea in the
form of a small lazy-susan for under 10 bucks. Sweet.”

The PC in a Desk

December 29th, 2005

Here’s a cool IKEA desk mod from Theron Parlin:

Kds

“For a long time, I have been annoyed at my big old PC case. It’s big,
it’s black, it’s not pretty in a living room. I used to live in a small student
apartment, so it wasn’t a big issue. But next month, I will be moving into a
small house, so I want to make things look better. As the PC will be in the
living room, I want to get rid of the big PC case. The answer is IKEA, and
chopping up the old case.

I bought this nice cheap desk “Jonas” from
IKEA. It’s simple, it’s “clean”, and the drawer/cupboard is more than big enough
for my computer parts. Buying it IKEA-style, meaning that I get it in parts, is
a big bonus for my project. It means I can cut the wood etc., before I assemble
the desk.

The goals of this project are simple. I want to hide the PC in a
desk, showing as little PC off as I can. This means I will try to do as little
“damage” to the desk as I possibly can. I have limited it to cutting in the back
board, and drilling inside the desk only (for rails etc.).”

DALSELV, The Making of

December 21st, 2005
Cmx “After carefully considering all of your comments, I finally got my
new bed.

I got to IKEA shortly after they opened so I could avoid the crowds and to
make sure I would have time to put my purchase together before going on holiday
tomorrow morning.

After returning home, I moved my existing furniture out of the way and
opened the flat-pack box. I was immediately intimidated by the large number of
pieces so I went up the street to Manuel’s Tavern for lunch.

Fully recharged, I set about the initial stages of assembly. I inserted
small wooden pegs into their designated holes per the first page of the
instructions. Step two was inserting screws to securely fasten the pieces
together. IKEA toolAs anyone who has assembled IKEA furniture knows, they use a
special hexagonal tool for their fasteners. Well, my box didn’t come with one.
At this point I uttered the first of what would become many non
broadcast-friendly words.

Fortunately I had saved the tool from my last IKEA purchase, and was able
to proceed…”
